Zaragoza Road construction snarls East El Paso traffic as safety project advances

ANTHONY, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) —Drivers in East El Paso are dealing with lane closures and slower traffic as the next phase of the Pebble Hills Regional Improvement Project gets underway.

The current phase covers Pebble Hills Boulevard between North Zaragoza Road and Rich Beem Boulevard in District 5. According to city officials, the work began during the last week of May and is expected to take about four months, with the larger project lasting about a year.

The city says this is a full roadway reconstruction project, not just a resurfacing job.

Planned upgrades include a rebuilt roadway, new sidewalks, ADA improvements, bike lanes, drainage work and other safety features for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

City Representative Ivan Niño said the work is being done in phases so traffic can continue moving in both directions during construction.

He also said the previous phase between John Hayes and Rich Beem has already been completed.

The city says the timing was chosen in part to reduce the impact on school traffic during summer break.

Even so, drivers are already seeing backups along the corridor. The added congestion has stretched commute times and created slower travel through one of the busiest areas in East El Paso.

Officials say delays and periodic lane closures should be expected while work continues, but the goal is a safer and smoother corridor once the project is finished.
