Prince William is taking a firm stance when it comes to his children and technology: no smartphones, no internet access, and no exceptions for now.
During his visit to Rio, Brazil, the Prince of Wales opened up in a conversation with TV host Luciano Huck about how he and Catherine, Princess of Wales, manage digital exposure for their three children.
For Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6, this means spending their early years completely phone-free.
The exchange revealed just how committed the couple is to delaying their kids’ entry into the smartphone world, even as social pressure mounts.

Prince William: “It’s the internet access I have a problem with”
William shared that none of his children currently use mobile phones.
George, who is 12, remains completely offline despite being at an age where most of his peers already own devices.
“We don’t—our children don’t have phones,” he said plainly.
“When George moves on to secondary school, then, maybe, he might have a phone that has no internet access.”
Huck appeared surprised, pressing the prince on whether George truly has no phone at his age.
“No phones,” William reiterated.
“To be honest, it’s getting to the point where it’s becoming a little bit of a tense issue.”

Still, William emphasized that the conversation at home remains open.
Rather than simply imposing rules, he and Kate explain their reasoning to George so he understands the boundaries rather than resenting them.
At the heart of William’s concern is unfiltered internet access.
“I think children can access too much stuff they don’t need to see online,” he explained.
“It’s the internet access I have a problem with.”
His stance aligns with growing global conversations about social media’s effects on children—from mental health risks to exposure to harmful content.
Many parents face the same dilemma, though few are navigating it under the glare of royal life.
For William, the priority is to protect his children’s childhood for as long as possible.
And, if that means holding off on smartphones—even when the future king is asking for one—he’s prepared to ride out the “tense” moments.
