Simple diet and lifestyle steps may help fight disease and boost longevity, experts say

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Taking a few simple steps to fight disease could also help people live longer, and it’s a goal that’s gaining popularity among younger adults.

William Freeman said he decided to take a proactive approach to his health with longevity in mind. “For me the goal was really about longevity and thinking about being proactive about my health,” Freeman said.

Freeman recently joined Quotient Health in Montgomery, where clients focus on improving health over time. Dr. Justin Greiwe, the clinic’s co-founder, said the approach is aimed at improving “health span,” not just lifespan.

“We call ourselves a longevity clinic, I would say we are mainly a health span clinic, looking to improve quality of life, function, increasing lean muscle tissue, increasing aerobic capacity,” Greiwe said.

Along with medical guidance, the clinic also has clients meet with fitness and nutrition specialists. The focus includes adding a variety of plant-based foods and lean proteins as part of a long-term eating plan.

That approach aligns with how Fahri Ozdil, owner of Cafe Mediterranean in Hyde Park, describes his restaurant’s cooking style. “Very healthy, mostly use olive oil 100 percent and protein wise mostly is grilled that’s why it’s so healthy,” Ozdil said.

A recent summary report in EatingWell found certain foods could add years to a person’s life and help reduce top illnesses as people age. The foods highlighted included leafy greens; lentils, beans and other legumes; and dark, richly colored fruits such as pomegranates.

Kim Mumper, who said she eats the Mediterranean way, pointed to both the taste and freshness of the diet. “We love the food its delicious, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit with a lot of the desserts,” Mumper said.

The report noted that diet is only one part of longevity, and that people may see improvements when healthy eating is combined with other lifestyle steps.

Freeman said he has already noticed changes. “I notice my energy levels are better, my mood is more stable, and me bringing a better self to my kids, to my work, to my wife,” he said.
