NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — The Salvation Army Del Oro Division is urging Northern California community members to help with the rising food insecurity across the region. The organization has seen a 12% increase in families seeking food assistance over the past year.
According to The Salvation Army, this increase is driven by inflation, housing instability and other economic challenges. Many local food pantries have reported a surge in demand, with some experiencing double-digit percentage increases in requests for assistance.
“Every day, we are meeting more people who never thought they’d need food assistance,” said Major Osei Stewart, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army Del Oro Division.
The Salvation Army provides millions of meals annually through food banks and meal programs. However, rising costs and increased demand are straining resources. Without additional community support, maintaining current service levels may become challenging.
“Every donation—whether it’s a can of food or a dollar—helps feed a neighbor in need,” Stewart said.
Community members are encouraged to support by going online, dropping off nonperishable food items at local Salvation Army locations, or volunteering their time.
