Rep. Nancy Pelosi Retires
A powerhouse in California politics is retiring. Former House Speaker and longtime San Francisco Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi says she will not seek reelection next year, ending a Congressional career that began in 1987. Her impending departure comes as some within the Democratic Party have called for a change in leadership, and supercharges a primary race amid big challenges on the national stage. Dustin Gardiner, co-author of POLITICO’s California Playbook joins Insight to talk about Pelosi’s legacy and other developments in state politics.
New Law Guarantees Admission to CSUs
Graduating high school students in California will soon have an easier pathway to attend college. A new state law establishes the CSU Direct Admissions Program, giving eligible students their pick of 16 campuses to choose from starting Jan. 1. It’s also aimed at helping CSUs that are struggling amid falling enrollment numbers. State Senator Christopher Cabaldon authored the new law and joins Insight to talk about how it will be rolled out, as well as the students it aims to support.
Annual ‘State of Lung Cancer’
Report Last month the American Lung Association released its 2025 State of Lung Cancer report, which is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. The three cities with the most long-term particle pollution in the country are in the San Joaquin Valley. Kesa Bruce is the Director of Advocacy at the American Lung Association. Will Barrett is the Assistant Vice President for Nationwide Clean Air Policy with the American Lung Association. They join us to discuss their annual findings through a California lens.
