HARRISBURG, Pa. (WPVI) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike is partnering with the state attorney general to crack down on drivers who don’t pay their fair share in tolls.
The half a million drivers who traverse the roads each day support the Turnpike’s maintenance by paying their way.
“I travel the Turnpike almost every weekend. I think it’s one of the best-kept roads in the state,” says John Maier of Manayunk.
Now the Turnpike is working with Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday to launch investigations into the most egregious toll evaders.
“Evading tolls, it’s illegal. And we are working within our power to hold toll violators accountable,” said PA Turnpike spokesperson Marissa Orbanek.
If you don’t respond to notices from the Turnpike, calls from collections and a suspension of your vehicle registration, the Attorney General’s office will now get involved if more than $12,000 is owed.
From September 2024 to August 2025, the Turnpike collected $1.85 billion in tolls, but $230 million in tolls was left unpaid.
Drivers say it’s only fair to pay your share.
“Everybody has to pay,” said Michael Crandall of Northeast Philadelphia.
The attorney general may elect to take civil collection action against those who refuse to pay.
