Mark Ruffalo shares how farm life changed his patenting style after he left city life for a 50-acre farm and grows strawberries and vegetables

Mark Ruffalo may be best known for playing the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but away from Hollywood, the actor has built a quieter life surrounded by nature. The actor lives with his family on a 50-acre property in Sullivan County, New York, which has become a place where he can spend more time with his wife and children and enjoy a slower pace of life.

He had purchased the property as a getaway around 10 years before the family eventually moved there permanently. In a 2011 interview with NOWNESS, Ruffalo explained that the decision to move to Upstate New York was largely about simplifying their lives and spending less time surrounded by unnecessary things.

Why did Mark Ruffalo move to the country?

Mark said the family wanted to rethink their lifestyle and question what they actually needed. The actor explained that the central idea behind their move was to make life simpler rather than constantly accumulating more things.
For Ruffalo, the change was not just about moving from the city to the countryside. He believed it could also give his family a different environment in which to live and raise their children.

When asked about whether the move had changed the family dynamic, Ruffalo described it as one of the best decisions he had made for his family, particularly his children.
The actor, “We made a pact to let them be and let them work out their differences on their own. We’re letting them grow a little wild and we step in when it’s essential, but in a lot of ways they figure stuff out on their own and they do it in a way that’s organic and lasts. We live in a small space and we’re really influenced by the natural world around us. Eventually that is reflected in one’s behavior and how you get along with other people. There’s a lot of quiet in the country and there’s a lot of quietness in my children.”
He also felt that living in a smaller space and being surrounded by nature had gradually influenced the way the family interacted with one another.

According to Ruffalo, the quietness of the countryside had also brought a sense of calm to his children.

Mark Ruffalo’s 50-acre farm has its own garden

Apart from spending time with his family, one of Ruffalo’s biggest interests at the property is gardening. In a 2017 interview with Men’s Journal, the actor spoke enthusiastically about the garden and the amount of time he spends working in it.

Ruffalo has previously described getting his hands dirty while gardening, often working barefoot and covered in mud. For him, the garden is not simply a way to grow food but also a hobby that he genuinely enjoys.

His garden includes strawberries, rhubarb, tomatoes, basil, corn, asparagus and watermelon. He has also been growing a small orchard with raspberries, blueberries, Honeycrisp apples and a pear tree.

His passion for gardening has even become a running joke at home. Ruffalo recalled that his wife once joked that his garden must cost “$100 a strawberry” because of the time and money he puts into it.

However, the actor said he does not mind the expense because gardening is something he enjoys doing. The garden has become one of his favourite parts of the property and another way for him to stay connected to the natural surroundings.

Mark Ruffalo returns as Hulk

While Mark Ruffalo enjoys his quieter life away from Hollywood, his acting career continues to keep him busy. The actor is set to return as Bruce Banner, aka Hulk, in Marvel’s upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres worldwide on December 18, 2026. Ruffalo’s return will bring him back into the Marvel universe, even as his life away from the franchise remains centred around his family, countryside home and passion for gardening.
