FRANKLIN, Ky. – A man is charged with racing a vehicle on a public highway in Simpson County.
According to a uniform citation, the Kentucky State Police says it observed two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed on Tuesday on Interstate 65 in Simpson County.
KSP says a radar confirmed the vehicles reached a speed of 118 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone.
The citation states 19-year-old Angel Cruz-Rodriguez, a driver of one of the vehicles, passed a trooper while Cruz-Rodriguez was going 93 mph.
According to the citation, the trooper pulled his cruiser out to catch up to the vehicle operated by Cruz-Rodriguez and observed that the vehicle did not have its lights on.
Cruz-Rodriguez then pulled off of the interstate into Sudden Service Gas Station in Franklin, authorities say.
According to authorities, Cruz-Rodriguez told the trooper he was racing another vehicle on the interstate but “did not know who they were.”
Cruz-Rodriguez was arrested and transported to the Simpson County Jail.
He faces charges of speeding 26 miles per hour or greater over the speed limit, reckless driving, racing a motor vehicle on a public highway and failure to illuminate headlamps.
