Learn how pollution damages your skin and hair and how to protect them effectively. Expert tips on cleansing, moisturising, and scalp care.

Pollution has quietly become one of the strongest external stressors on the skin and scalp. In cities, the mix of dust, smoke, and humidity forms a layer on the skin within minutes, one that disrupts the barrier far more than people realise. Dr Abhishek Pilani, founder, Assure Clinic and MD Dermatology, Hair Transplant & Restoration Specialist, explains that many of his patients don’t spend long hours outdoors, yet still experience dullness, acne flare-ups, or sudden roughness simply because the skin is constantly fighting environmental toxins.

According to Dr Pilani, the scalp reacts just as sensitively. Pollutants mix with sweat and natural oils, leading to itching, dandruff, and episodes of visible hair fall. “People assume pollution only affects those exposed for long durations, but even brief daily exposure is enough to irritate both the skin and scalp,” he notes.

The first and most effective step, Dr Pilani emphasises, is regular cleansing. “A mild, non-drying face wash twice a day is enough to lift off pollutants without causing irritation,” he says. For the scalp, he recommends washing two to three times a week, especially on days when air quality dips.

Strengthening the skin barrier is just as crucial. Dr Pilani advises using a lightweight moisturiser with ceramides or niacinamide to help the skin recover and maintain resilience through the day. “And regardless of the season or weather, sunscreen remains the strongest protective layer we have,” he adds.

For hair, Dr Pilani suggests incorporating a small amount of serum or leave-in conditioner to create a protective shield that reduces dryness and frizz caused by pollution. Simple daily habits, he says, go a long way. “Covering your hair while travelling, avoiding unnecessary touching of the face, and staying well-hydrated all make a noticeable difference,” he emphasises.

Pollution may not be something we can avoid completely, but with a consistent, mindful routine, Dr Pilani believes its impact on the skin and scalp can be effectively managed. “You can’t escape pollution,” he says, “but you can absolutely strengthen your skin and hair to withstand it.”
