Early reactions to the HMD Touch 4G have been mixed. Many users appreciate its nostalgic form factor, pocket-friendly size, and strong battery life. The inclusion of 4G, Wi-Fi hotspot, and USB-C in such a basic device has been praised as practical and forward-thinking.

However, criticism centers on the extremely limited operating system and hardware. With only 64 MB RAM, 128 MB storage, and no support for Android apps such as WhatsApp or UPI, some reviewers see it as a “smart feature phone” that doesn’t fully satisfy either market.

The term Hybrid Phone means that the HMD Touch is suppose to bridge the feature phone and the smartphone segment. Early understanding on this new category points towards a device that was meant for adolescents , and certain prototype units were spotted to be running on a forked version of Android which would allow the device to have limited smartphone features.

The retail version however runs on RTOS, and surprisingly , this is not the first device from HMD using this software as the Nokia 225 4G also runs on RTOS. My speculation is that the forked Android version was not performing well with the hardware of HMD Touch 4G. The Express Chat is definitely welcomed as the cross platform chat and video call service would mean that data based calls and communication will be possible on this device.

You can watch the deep dive on HMD Touch 4G here:

Perhaps HMD realizes that the HMD Touch 4G would be apt for markets outside Europe as a more powerful and better offering in the form of HMD Fuse is available there and the bridging experience was instead, repurposed for markets like India. There are rumors as well that Whatsapp would be introduced through CloudApp and we should have better details on this next year.

At the time of writing, the HMD Touch 4G is an incomplete device which lacks optimization and I cannot recommend it for what it was intend to do. A device that is focus on child safety, or even for adults should be dependable and the constant lag and hangs would deter anyone who wants to use this as a primary device.

I do hope that the HMD Fusion 4G would not be another poor attempt by HMD to try to diversify their portfolios but abandons it thereafter. To win the long game, HMD needs t o deliver what is expected from the users.
