A building in the historic district of downtown Wilmington caught on fire on Friday.
According to the Wilmington Fire Department, crews are reporting to a fire at the Graystone Inn in downtown Wilmington.
According to crews on the scene, the call came in at around 1:40 p.m.
Many downtown residents gathered across the street from Graystone Inn and watched as crews battled the flames. Several people became emotional as they watched the scene unfold.
“I mean, each building down here is like a piece of home for me, so it’ll definitely be different and hard to get used to not having it around,” said Lydia Huggins, a life-long Wilmington resident.
Another neighbor said his wife worked for the Inn for several years, and it was a beautiful place, and he is sad to see it go.
Fire crews confirmed that the fire is under control. Many residents had hoped the building would reopen after an accidental fire in 2023 shut its doors.
Residents said downtown Wilmington will never be the same after another devastating fire at the Graystone Inn.
