SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Dana Williamson, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s former chief of staff and a political consultant from Carmichael, has been charged with multiple counts of fraud and obstruction, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The charges were revealed after Williamson’s arrest, marking a significant development in a three-year investigation into political corruption, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
U.S. Attorney Eric Grant emphasized the importance of this step in their ongoing efforts to combat corruption.
“As it always has, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to protect the people of California from political corruption,” said Grant.
The investigation, led by the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation, uncovered that Williamson and associates allegedly diverted $225,000 from a dormant political campaign for personal use. They reportedly funneled the funds through various business entities, disguising them as payments for a no-show job.
Special Agent in Charge Sid Patel of the FBI noted the agency’s commitment to uncovering fraud and corruption.
“The FBI will remain vigilant in its efforts to uncover fraud and corruption, ensuring our government systems are held to the highest standards,” said Patel.
Williamson is accused of making false tax claims exceeding $1 million, including personal expenses such as luxury travel and home furnishings. Additionally, she allegedly created false contracts after receiving a subpoena related to Paycheck Protection Program loans.
Linda Nguyen, Special Agent in Charge at the IRS-CI Oakland Field Office, highlighted the severity of disguising personal expenses as business deductions.
“IRS-CI will pursue charges against those who deliberately exploit their business for personal enrichment,” said Nguyen.
Williamson is set to appear in court at 2 p.m. in Sacramento. If convicted, she faces significant penalties, including up to 20 years in prison for each count of bank and wire fraud. The charges are allegations, and Williamson is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
