The George West ISD School Board met on Nov. 12 to recognize outstanding students and staff, review the district’s strategic plan, and conduct regular business.
The primary campus was recognized as one of only 28 campuses in the state to receive the Lone Star Blue Ribbon Award for outstanding academic performance and progress in closing achievement gaps. The board also honored Christina Gonzales, a paraprofessional at the elementary campus, as Employee of the Month. In addition, the girls cross-country team and volleyball team were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments.
The district presented board members with the initial version of the new five-year strategic plan. Over the past several weeks, more than 60 school and community stakeholders have worked together to outline a shared vision for the district’s future.
Committees were tasked with identifying goals and action steps across ten focus areas: academics; technology; highly qualified teachers; family and community engagement; safety and security; operations, including transportation, food service, finance, and maintenance; culture and climate; facilities; health and wellness; and extracurricular activities.
The board opted to table approval of the plan to allow additional time for review and the opportunity to make adjustments.
Trustees approved acceptance of a $500,000 grant through the School Violence and Prevention Program, part of the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). The three-year grant requires a 25% local match and will be used to upgrade cameras, access points, and control systems throughout the district.
Other items approved included:
– The annual review of investment policies and investment strategies.
– A policy governing the acquisition, parent review, and access to library materials as required by House Bill 13.
– Updates to several local board policies.
No action was taken following the executive session; however, trustees reviewed the Intruder Detection Audit Report.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
