David Attenborough’s quiet life in town he calls his ‘favourite place on earth’

Sir David Attenborough, now turned 100, has inspired millions by bringing the natural world into our homes. After more than 70 years of film-making, Attenborough’s instantly recognisable voice is synonymous with the story of ‌nature. He has brought the natural world into our living rooms through award-winning natural history programmes such as Life on Earth, The Private Life of Plants, Planet Earth and The Blue Planet.

With over 40 animal and plant species named after him and a constellation, he has explored uncharted land and met the remotest people on earth, inspiring viewers with an interest in the natural world. Despite the wildlife expert visiting nearly every corner of the earth, to him, his most beloved place is at home in his suburban setting of Richmond, claiming that it’s his “favourite place on earth” in his feature-length film, Oceans.

Sir David was born in Isleworth, Middlesex and grew up on the campus of the University of Leicester, where his father was headmaster, however, these days, Sir David resides in Richmond.

The affluent residential area borders the stunning River Thames and is home to the beautiful Kew Gardens.

Richmond Park is also a very popular green space where herds of deer can be seen.

The charming area is home to several posh cafes and restaurants as well as boutiques and plenty of coffee shops.

Despite being propelled into the limelight, the celebrity veteran enjoys a humble life in one of London’s most idyllic suburbs, as he spends most of his time now after sharing he’s coming to “the end” of his life.

Sir David has remained living in his family home in Richmond, London, since his beloved wife Jane died 29 years ago.

His dedication to his craft became a therapeutic escape during his time of grief. Married for 47 years to Jane Elizabeth Ebsworth Oriel, the couple share two children, Robert and Susan.

During the years of making documentaries, Sir David has long highlighted the environmental challenges facing the world and contributed to the development of initiatives aimed at protecting endangered species.
