DALLAS — Dallas Police Association President Jaime Castro has been placed on administrative leave from the Dallas Police Department.
Sources say DPD investigators turned a case over to the District Attorney’s office for a grand jury review.
Sources say it involves a fatal crash from March in which Castro says he was a passenger in a vehicle that was driven by his girlfriend.
The administrative action comes after the department’s public integrity unit investigated.
The crash happened around 10 p.m. on March 15 in the 2500 block of Northwest Highway — a stretch described by sources as poorly lit and without crosswalks. Atianna Washington was struck while crossing the roadway and later died at the hospital.
Two Dallas police officers who responded to the crash remain on administrative leave. One is assigned to the DWI unit and the other to the traffic division. Internal affairs reviewed whether the officers handled the scene properly and whether Castro’s presence, as the head of the city’s largest police association, influenced their decisions.
Sources say neither officer administered a drug or alcohol test and didn’t ask the driver if she or Castro had been drinking. Department policy does not require alcohol or drug testing unless impairment is suspected, and sources say the officers believed the driver did not appear intoxicated.
A Dallas Police Association attorney declined to comment on the latest development.
Back in March, one of Castro’s attorneys, John Snider, wrote, ” The loss of life in this accident was tragic, and deepest condolences go out to the family. Accident investigators received full cooperation during all phases of the investigation.”
Washington’s mother, Mindi Crapo, described her daughter as “beautiful, full of life and [having] a vibrant spirit.” Washington left behind a 4-year-old son, whom Crapo is now raising.
