California winter storm: Mid-week storm to bring rain, snow to Sierra

Sacramento expects a cold storm with rain, wind and snow at elevations as low as 4,500 feet Thursday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Weather conditions forecast for the Sacramento region will experience quick changes this week from sunny and warm conditions Monday to colder wet weather by Thursday.  There is another storm Sunday that is tougher to pin down but should be colder with rain and snow potential — but lighter amounts.

When

Late Wednesday night, clouds will thicken up with rain possible overnight into Thursday.  Most of the impacts from this storm are focused on Thursday.  If you had to pick a time with more heavy rainfall that would be Thursday morning, snaring the commute.  There will be rain chances all day until the evening.

The snow forecast is tricky but should start off high during the day with mostly rain for the Sierra.  As colder air gets drawn in, you can expect the snow levels to drop and by the evening on Thursday and early Friday for anything lingering the snow level will get down to 4,000 ft. The storm is done by Friday, and we should be dry until Sunday.

Sunday’s storm is still waffling as far as timing but plan on rain chances Sunday for now.

Impact

The first impact will be colder temperatures.  We will go from the upper 70s to the mid 60s for highs on Thursday.  So, this will be a fairly big temperature drop.

The wind will be strong at times with 20-30 mph gusts and stronger — at times.

The rain will affect activities and will total 1-2″ in the Valley and more for the higher elevations.

We could see 5-10″ of Sierra snow once it drops to the passes and below.

Sunday will see much less for rain and snow potential because it is a weaker storm, but it will be colder with highs near 60.

Need

Plan for a wet commute on Thursday, possibly both ways.  It will be much colder than the near record upper 70s from Monday.

Travel in the Sierra needs to be monitored for chain controls Thursday. Lower snow is also possible and communities between 4-5,000 feet can expect some snow-related issues as well. Chain controls and delays are possible as well as closure of roads for safety at times.
