California winter storm: Mid-week storm to bring rain, snow to Sierra

Expect rain before sunrise Wednesday then on and off showers for much of the day for Northern California.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Weather conditions forecast for the Sacramento region will change in a big way Wednesday with rain coming back to the area.

It’s been a dry stretch through the last part of October with warm and sunny days and temperatures above average in the mid to upper 70s.  The first few days of November have also been nice and warm with dry conditions.  The Wednesday storm will have rain which will be heavy at times but clears by Thursday.

When

Monday and Tuesday this week will be warm and dry with temperatures in the 70s.  For far Northern California it will be different with rain as far South as Chico for a few days.

Rain will move into the rest of Northern California by early Wednesday morning. It will also be windy as well.  This sets up rain before sunrise and wet roads and clogged drains early.  This will be a challenging commute with heavy rain during the morning commute. It will break up a bit later in the day with scattered showers then by late Wednesday evening the storm moves out, and we will by clearing by Thursday.

Impact

The first initial band of rain looks fairly strong with gusty winds and heavy rain. It is early in leaf season which means the chances drains get clogged are higher and there will be ponding in neighborhoods as well as freeways.  In this scenario, there are spinouts and crashes.

We are mostly expecting rain out of this system with snow levels high at 9,000 feet in the beginning then dropping to 7,000 feet by late Wednesday night.  Passes could get snow, but it will be at the end of a system that is leaving.

We are looking at 0.25-0.75″ of valley rain and well over an inch for higher elevations for Wednesday.  Winds will be 20-30 mph at times creating more leaf debris and potential for clogged drains.

Need

Plan for a messy and slow commute on Wednesday with rain, crashes and ponding. Getting to work or school safely is a priority, but could be a challenge. Rain will be heavy in the mountains as well so slick roads for everyone Wednesday morning. The afternoon will still have scattered showers so plan for on and off rain for the rest of the day. It will be colder as well with wind and temperatures in the 60s.
