Apple plans 5 new satellite features for iPhones: Here’s what to expect

Apple is reportedly preparing a major expansion of its satellite technology for future iPhones. Since launching Emergency SOS via satellite in 2022, Apple has been steadily providing new ways to keep users connected when there’s no cellular or Wi-Fi signal. Now, the company is planning to take things further with new satellite features.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the expected features include satellite-powered Apple Maps,  enhanced messaging and more. Here are the five new satellite features Apple is reportedly working on.

  • A satellite framework for apps: Apple is said to be developing an API that will allow third-party developers to add satellite connectivity to their apps. Implementation will depend on individual developers, and not every app may support it.
  • Satellite-powered maps: Apple Maps could work directly through satellite signals. Users would be able to navigate, search for destinations, and view map details even when completely offline.
  • Richer satellite messaging: Apple is expected to improve its satellite messaging feature by adding support for sending photos along with text.
  • Easier natural usage: Currently, satellite features require users to point their iPhone toward the sky. Apple wants to make connections simpler and more natural, enabling the phone to stay linked even if it’s in a pocket, car, or indoors, according to the report.
  • Satellite over 5G: Next year’s iPhones are expected to include 5G NTN support, allowing cellular towers to connect directly to satellites.

Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly planning to use Google’s custom Gemini model to power the long-delayed Siri overhaul. Under the partnership, Apple will reportedly pay around $1 billion per year to Google. Apple does not likely plan to disclose this partnership or reveal that Siri will partially depend on technology from a competitor.
