Mathews LeRoy explains that footed cake plates initially became popular in the 1800s when afternoon tea became all the rage. These plates could have been made with heavy, pressed, or cut glass, china, or majolica. Footed cake plates that feature a domed lid or have two to three tiers are even more valuable.
“I personally have a collection of pressed glass cake plates of differing sizes in my kitchen (some with domes and some without), which make for an interesting arrangement in a corner, and the perfect display for cookies, bread, and cake,” she says, adding that the value depends on the manufacturer and age of the cake stand.
For instance, manufacturers like Fostoria, Haviland, Limoges, and Majolica can increase the value up to $1,000, while many can be bought and sold for $50 to $200, as Mathews LeRoy details.
