Madurai: Police have registered a case against three inmates of the Madurai Central Prison for allegedly smuggling a mobile phone into the prison.Police confiscated a mobile phone hidden in a toilet where remand prisoner Selvapandi, 25, was being held. According to police sources, Selvapandi confessed that Muthu Irul, 31, and Kumar, 39, both convicted prisoners, instructed him to hide the mobile in the toilet.On Nov 10, when Irul went to Vadipatti court for a hearing in another case, he allegedly bought a button-type mobile phone for 9,000 from an unknown person, based on Kumar’s instruction. Irul then concealed the phone in his rectum and illegally smuggled it into the prison, police said.When prison authorities received information regarding mobile phone usage inside the prison, they conducted a raid and confiscated the mobile along with a battery and a SIM card from Selvapandi, police added. Upon receiving a complaint from the prison authorities, Karimedu police registered a case, and an investigation is underway to determine if the phone was used to contact anyone.Additionally, an investigation has been intensified into the role of prison guards and how the phone was smuggled into the facility.
