Polished In Purpose: The Spirit Of The ONYX 25

Power and influence, at their core, represent the capacity to effect change, shape narratives, and mobilize resources. It’s the ability to impact decisions — whether in a boardroom, a community, or a political arena.

For a Black person, however, power and influence carry a unique weight, shaped by a history of systemic oppression and exclusion. They signify not only individual success but also the potential to uplift an entire community.

In Sacramento, a region with a significant African American population and a vital role in California’s economy, this takes on particular importance. Black power and influence mean having a voice in this influential region, challenging disparities, and ensuring equitable representation across sectors. It means building bridges, fostering collaboration, and creating pathways for future generations. As Kwame Ture and Charles V. Hamilton articulated in “Black Power: The Politics of Liberation,” it’s about Black people uniting, defining their own goals, and leading their own organizations.

However, this power is not without its burdens. Black leaders often face heightened scrutiny, the pressure to be flawless role models, and the expectation to speak for an entire race. They may encounter resistance rooted in prejudice and be tasked with dismantling systems designed to marginalize. The responsibility is immense: to use their influence ethically, to advocate for justice, and to create a more inclusive and equitable Sacramento for all.

It is in this context that The Sacramento OBSERVER proudly introduces the 2025 ONYX 25 Awards — the inaugural annual recognition of Black excellence and impact across our region.

The name “ONYX” was chosen with intention. Onyx, a beautiful black gemstone, is associated with strength, protection, and grounding. It symbolizes resilience in the face of adversity and the ability to absorb and transform negative energy. These are qualities that deeply resonate with the essence of power and influence within the Black experience. Just as the onyx stone is valued for its enduring strength and beauty, so too are the ONYX 25 honorees celebrated for their unwavering commitment to their community.

Rooted in Responsibility. Polished in Purpose.

This guiding theme captures the heart of what the ONYX 25 represents — leaders whose influence is steady, grounded, and intentional. Their strength comes not from position, but from purpose. Their shine is not bestowed, but earned — a reflection of the care, discipline, and responsibility they carry for the people they serve.

These awards are not intended to create an exclusive pantheon, but rather to shine a light on individuals whose contributions — often unseen by the mainstream — are transformative within our community. The ONYX 25 seeks to highlight a more holistic understanding of influence: one rooted in community impact, cultural leadership, and the ability to empower others. It is a recognition that true power lies not only in individual achievement but in the collective advancement of the African American community, inspiring others to rise to the challenges and opportunities of leadership.

This inaugural ONYX 25 celebration is the product of thoughtful collaboration and creative excellence. I want to make a special acknowledgement to The OBSERVER staff whose vision and dedication helped to bring it to life: Visuals Editor Louis Bryant for capturing the remarkable portraits of each honoree; Digital Strategist Christine Shelby for skillfully coordinating honoree engagement and shaping our digital storytelling; General Manager Wilma Whitfield for her leadership in event production and community partnerships; Chief Technology Officer Apryl Pilolli for her innovative design direction and flawless execution of the technology behind this year’s awards and Get Current Studios for the beautiful design of this printed publication.

As you turn these pages and meet the 2025 ONYX 25 honorees, I invite you to celebrate with us — to be inspired by their brilliance, grounded by their purpose, and reminded of the extraordinary strength within our community. Welcome to this special edition of The Sacramento OBSERVER and to the inaugural ONYX 25 — a reflection of who we are, and a celebration of the strength and brilliance that continue to define our community.
