Start with a Neutral Palette
Using muted, neutral tones instantly sets a sense of calm and is gentle on the eyes. “While I’m definitely one for decorating with color because it can be fun and exciting, I do believe that neutral spaces promote the calmest, sanctuary-like vibes,” says Karin Bohn, founder and creative director of the House of Bohn.
To add interest, layer textures when using whites or light neutrals like cream or taupe. While flat white walls and smooth furnishings cause little distraction, they might seem dull without diversification. Include fabrics and patterns, and use warm tones like gold or pale tan to avoid a clinical feel.
Create a Cluster of Color
Introducing bright accessories like pillows or throws can boost positivity and energy, say Meghan Hackett-Cassidy and Erin Hackett of Hackett Interiors. Pottery, colorful art, or a jewel-tone vase delights the eye and uplifts your mood.
Cluster favorite accessories together as a focal point. Every glance can uplift your spirits. Visible spots like a fireplace mantel or entryway table are good anchor locations.
Maximize the Appeal of a Fireplace
Even unlit, a fireplace presents the opportunity to be the room’s highlight. Make the hearth a focal point by decorating around it. Use decor ideas to create a cozy vignette on walls and floors nearby.
When the fireplace is off, brighten the firebox with a decorative screen or fill it with birch branches or pillar candles. This avoids a dark void and is instead a chance for creative expression.

The soft glow of candles is a soothing decor idea for any space, so use them generously throughout your house. “In the morning, I like to light candles in the kitchen and living room and let them burn until evening,” says co-founder, principal designer, and chief creative officer of Metal + Petal, Jade Joyner. “It creates a soothing ambience while adding a little luxe to my day.”
Keep a substantial supply of candles (tapers, pillars, or votives) and several favorite candleholders to have plenty on hand when you want them. Just be sure to blow candles out when you’re not at home or go to bed.
Work with Light
Use different types of lighting—natural, ambient, and task lighting—in every room. “Having a bright, lighted room is an easy way to make a space feel more inviting and put together,” says co-founder and principal designer of BANDD DESIGN, Sara Barney. “Consider adding in some sconces, a floor lamp, desk lamp, or pendants to bring more light to those darker spaces in your home.”
During the day, let natural sunlight in by opening your blinds. For evenings, create a cozy atmosphere with a lighting scheme that uses warm-toned bulbs to mimic the soft glow of sunset.
Scent the Air
A pleasant aroma is a warm welcome, quickly setting a calming atmosphere at home. Interior designer Darla Bankston May recommends using scented candles and fresh flowers to keep your favorite spaces smelling delightful.
Consider running an essential oil diffuser for a custom scent. “Eucalyptus, geranium, and chamomile are some of my favorites, and they bring a soothing, spa-like quality to any room,” says founder and creative director of Black Lacquer Design, Caitlin Murray.
Display Family Photos

Eyles suggests filling a wide, shallow bowl about halfway with water and floating some of your favorite blooms on the surface for an easy, spa-inspired centerpiece.
If you’re worried about wilted petals and neglected plants, choose dried flowers or hearty houseplants and indulge in fresh flowers for special occasions.
Emphasize a View to Nature
If you have a great view from your windows, highlight that portrait of nature with smart window treatment choices. Layering treatments gives you the option of creating a look that suits the day. For example, shades can block out the view when privacy is needed or go up to emphasize the view. A valance over the shade ensures windows are never too stark, and draperies along the sides add softness.

Make your bathroom function for both practical and pampering needs. Create a spa-like atmosphere with simple soothing decor ideas like a stack of fluffy towels or a few candles, then take advantage of the space to soak away stress with a bath. “Clear out the kids’ toys, grab your favorite book, and take back the bathroom as your own for a few quiet moments of solitude,” suggests creative director and CEO of Kate Lester Interiors, Kate Lester. Warm colors, soft lighting, and soothing music can add to the experience.
Create a Relaxing Bedroom
Improve your sleep quality (and the quality of your waking hours) by making your bedroom a sanctuary. “After a long day, there is nothing more soothing than slipping into crisp, clean, high thread count sheets,” Lester says. “Invest in a set, and every evening, it will feel like you are relaxing at your favorite luxury hotel.”
Keep only the essentials within reach and view to extend the calming effect beyond your bed. Decorate walls in colors that comfort you, and add only artwork that makes you smile. Cover the floor with rugs or carpeting that feels best on bare feet.
Organize Away Chaos
Chaos breeds anxiety, so think of getting organized as prepping for calm to come. “I’m a firm believer that a space with lots of knick-knacks, or just disorganization, creates visual tension and physical stress,” Bohn says. If your space is teeming with stuff, start the path to organization by focusing on a single space, such as the place where you enter the house. Recruit everyone in the household to participate in clearing clutter, starting at the door.
Once you’ve cleared one room of clutter, shift your focus to the next space. “Organize your living room by adding an oversized basket in the corner for throw blankets or toys,” suggests Fenimore. “Not only will it feel satisfying to manage the mess, but it will add a little extra space to the room.”
Create a Comfort Zone
Designate a place in your home where relaxing is the primary function, suggests Bankston May. Tailor it to your choice of activity, whether reading, listening to music, or meditating. “Move a comfortable chair to a spot in your home that gets natural light or has a view you love,” she says. Put a barrier between you and distractions, such as a folding screen, to block unwanted views and redirect foot traffic away from the area.
You don’t need to set aside an entire room; select a spot that’s out of the main flow of household activity. “All you need is a comfortable chair, a floor lamp, and a side table for your teacup,” Eyles says. “Everyone needs a place to get away from it all.”
