One of the busiest Starbucks locations in the country closed down without notice recently, and it’s not for the reason you may think.
The baristas at the Downtown Disney Starbucks in California walked off the job Saturday night and have been striking since then, according to LAist.
Here’s what you need to know about why the Downtown Disney coffee shop shut down and why the unionized workers are striking.
Why did the Starbucks at California’s Downtown Disney shut its doors?
Starbucks baristas at the Downtown Disney coffee shop have been fighting for “fair pay, fair scheduling and an end to union-busting,”according to the Starbucks Workers United.
The strike has caused the coffee shop to shut down completely, and the Starbucks store locator shows the coffee shop as closed.
The strike is part of a nationwide dispute between Starbucks’ union and the company over contract negotiations.
The union voted to authorize a strike last week.
While the strike will not take place at all Starbucks locations, it could take place at any Starbucks store — especially with Red Cup Day coming up, when Starbucks baristas have historically gone on strike in the past.
For those unfamiliar with Red Cup Day, it is the one day of the year where Starbucks gives out free reusable holiday cups.
