Globe Telecom Inc. is accelerating its testing of non-terrestrial networks (NTN), or satellite-powered mobile services, as part of its effort to close the connectivity gap in remote and underserved areas across the Philippines.
Working with leading low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite providers, Globe is conducting advanced trials of direct-to-cellular (D2C) or satellite-to-phone (Sat2Phone) technology. The system allows standard mobile phones to connect directly to satellites without additional equipment, offering a potential breakthrough in extending mobile coverage nationwide.

Globe recently ran a live pilot with Lynk Global, a Virginia-based satellite operator, to test the technology’s ability to support voice calls over satellite links. The trial confirmed that voice communication is possible through Lynk’s LEO network, a development seen as an important step toward commercial deployment.
Gerhard Tan, Globe’s Senior Director for Technology Strategy and Innovation, said:

The tests build on Globe’s earlier experiments with satellite-powered messaging and voice services, marking a gradual move toward integrating NTN technology into its broader mobile infrastructure. According to industry analysts, such systems could help improve network resilience during disasters and provide coverage in remote areas where building towers is costly or impractical.

Globe’s latest round of trials is based on the 3GPP Pre-Release 17 standards, which define technical specifications for direct satellite-to-device communication. The company said the goal is to determine how satellite links can complement terrestrial networks rather than replace them.
While satellite-to-phone services are still in early stages globally, operators in the Asia-Pacific region are investing in NTN trials to bridge connectivity gaps across island nations and mountainous regions. Globe is among the first in Southeast Asia to test the technology at scale.
