The Elder Scrolls 6 is “still a long way off” according to Bethesda’s Todd Howard, though its development is now an “everyday thing”.
“I’m preaching patience,” Howard told GQ in a new interview. “I don’t want fans to feel anxious.”
There’s still no official release date for The Elder Scrolls 6 and there are very few known details. For Howard, though, it’s the game he’s focused on at the moment: “We have hundreds of people on Fallout right now, with 76 and some other things we’re doing, but The Elder Scrolls 6 is the everyday thing,” he said.
It’s been 14 years since the last game in the series, the critically acclaimed Skyrim, and its follow-up is eagerly awaited by fans. But the company since then has released Fallout 4 and, most recently, Starfield.
Howard admitted, however, The Elder Scrolls has been away for too long.
“I do like to have a break between them, where it isn’t like a ‘plus one’ sequel,” Howard said of the series. “I think it’s also good for an audience to have a break – The Elder Scrolls has been too long, let’s be clear. But we wanted to do something new with Starfield. We needed a creative reset.”
When can we expect news on The Elder Scrolls 6? At the least, Howard teased he’d love to just shadow drop it when it’s ready.
“I like to just announce stuff and release it,” he said. “My perfect version – and I’m not saying this is going to happen – is that it’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear.”
That’s what happened earlier this year with the Oblivion remaster. “You might say that was a test run,” teased Howard. “It worked out well.”
The Oblivion remaster was revealed and launched in April, and very quickly reached a substantial peak player count on Steam. It proves there’s certainly an appetite for the next in the series.
