The city of West Sacramento is looking to implement changes and create a noise ordinance after nearly 40 years without one.
As it currently stands, noise complaints are handled by various general plan and public nuisance rules, which also regulate more mundane tasks such as overgrown weeds. With that in mind, the city is holding a series of workshops — asking the public for input on what kinds of noisy activity should be banned or limited to certain hours.
“What we’re trying to do is consolidate all of that into one part of our municipal code, make it more predictable for folks to understand, and easier for enforcement opportunities,” West Sacramento’s planning manager, Tristan Osborn, stated.
Some residents spoke to CBS News Sacramento about their disdain over the lack of legislation regarding noise levels within city limits.
“They’re driving really fast down Jefferson,” said West Sacramento resident Lorri Trotter. “It keeps us up at night. It’s very disturbing.”
Others have complained about weekend events at area schools and the noise disruptions those create, with one resident saying, “I can’t have a conversation on my patio.”
Some areas of West Sacramento have adopted some aspects of the city of Sacramento’s noise ordinance, such as prohibiting things like using leaf blowers before 7 a.m. or playing music loud enough to be heard more than 100 feet away.
City staff and elected officials are hopeful that a new noise plan will be in place by next fall.
“We want to make sure that it’s a comfortable, enjoyable place for everyone to visit and work here in West Sacramento,” Osborn said.
