A man impersonating an ICE officer was arrested at Sacramento State after hitting a student with his SUV, leaving the campus community frustrated by the university’s silence on the matter. Sacramento State police reported that the suspect, 19-year-old Omar Maadarani, was driving a white SUV with police lights and sirens, yelling “ICE raid” before hitting a student inside the garage. The student is reportedly OK. Maadarani was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon while operating a motor vehicle and impersonating a peace officer. It has not been confirmed if he is a student at Sacramento State. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on Nov. 10.Despite the incident occurring nine days ago, students and staff on campus say they have not received any communication from the university. One student mentioned learning about the event through a Reddit thread, while another found out from a State Hornet article. The lack of communication has left some on campus frustrated.”So, not really taking this seriously and actually coming out saying that you’re going to protect your students, I think this was definitely a hate crime, like this was not a prank or anything, this was targeted,” said Jessica Ramirez, a senior and member of MECha, an advocacy organization for Hispanic students on campus. “The response has been slow and has been very low accountability,” said Dr. Nancy Huante-Tzintzun, an assistant professor at the university.Huante-Tzintzun is a professor of the student who was hit by the SUV. She reported that the student was shaken up and noted that other students are also shaken due to the ICE impersonation aspect of the case. Students and staff are now concerned about why they were not notified about the incident and what the university will do if actual ICE agents are on campus. The university has declined to comment or release any statements despite multiple contact attempts from KCRA 3. The police department shared the arrest information on Tuesday, but has not responded to requests for comment on Wednesday.
