YouTube’s latest test is preparing support for direct messages where users can share videos with each other and have conversations.

Detailed on a support page, YouTube is now testing “new ways to share videos.” The test sees users gaining the ability to share videos and “have conversations about them” within the YouTube mobile app.

In other words, YouTube is adding direct messages.

YouTube says the feature is rolling out now to users 18 years of age or older, but only in Ireland and Poland. Apparently, this has been a “top feature request.” Notably, YouTube had a messaging feature for a few years, but removed it in 2019.

YouTube explains:

Testing new ways to share videos on YouTube: We’re experimenting with a new feature that makes it easy for you to share videos you love (long-form, Shorts and live streams) and have conversations about them directly on the YouTube mobile app. This experiment is rolling out to adults 18 years or older in Ireland and Poland. This has been a top feature request, so we’re excited to test this out and hear your feedback!

If you’re in the experiment:

  • You can still share YouTube videos through other apps you use today
  • By messaging on YouTube, you accept that messages may be reviewed to ensure they follow our Community Guidelines. Community Guidelines apply to all content on YouTube, including on-platform video shares and messages. Our systems may scan for content that is against these policies, such as content that could cause real-world harm, and we may review flagged content

Another support page further explains how this works, with users having to send invites to each other before starting to chat. If you’re sent an invite, you can decline it. You can also block users and report conversations. YouTube will also review messages to ensure they follow the same Community Guidelines as videos and comments on YouTube.

It’s unclear when this might roll out more broadly, but it’s rolling out to users in Ireland and Poland starting today.

Would you use direct messages on YouTube?
