Lynchburg, Va. — On the back of a career-high 28 points from Audra Petty, the University of Lynchburg women’s basketball team earned a hard-fought 77-70 victory over William Peace on Tuesday night at Turner Gym in come-from-behind fashion to stay unbeaten on the season.
Petty anchored the comeback with an impressive all-around performance, adding nine rebounds and four assists on top of her collegiate best point total while shooting 10-for-22 from the field. Her 28 points were the most scored by a Hornet this season. After trailing by 10 at halftime, the Hornets (4-0) used a dominant third quarter and strong bench production to surge back and secure their fourth straight win. Her energy helped spark a 23-11 Lynchburg advantage in the third period, turning a 44-34 halftime deficit into a two-point lead heading into the fourth.
The Lynchburg bench found success in tonight’s affair. Bree Spainhour provided eight points and drew five fouls in just eight minutes of action, while Madison Hoffman added six points and steady defensive play. The Hornets also received strong contributions from Ashley Vandergrift, who scored 10 points and hit two threes, and Kate Littlejohn, who tallied five first-quarter points to help Lynchburg keep pace early.
Taylor Brown added nine points while Brooke Cason contributed a season-high seven assists, helping to facilitate the offense throughout the matchup. Lynchburg’s defensive pressure forced 19 William Peace turnovers, converting many of them into transition opportunities and finishing the contest with 19 points of opponent miscues.
The Hornets shot .422 percent from the floor and .300 percent from three-point range while holding William Peace to .258 percent from the field in the second half. Lynchburg also controlled second-chance scoring with a 17-6 advantage on the offensive glass.
The Pacers led by as many as 14 late in the second quarter, but the Hornets responded with poise, executing efficiently down the stretch. A series of late baskets from Petty and Vandergrift helped seal the victory, keeping Lynchburg’s record unblemished.
Next up on the slate, the Hornets will hit the road for their first conference competition of the season, traveling to Lexington, Va. for a bout against No. 6 Washington and Lee on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m.
