This fall, Apple unveiled an unusually large collection of official iPhone accessories, but per a new leak, it seems that the company may have even bigger plans ahead—including iPhone cases with touch interfaces.
Future iPhone cases could get ‘touch interfaces’
Apple did a lot of interesting things with its flagship iPhone 17 lineup this fall. In addition to launching the new iPhone Air and big redesign for iPhone 17 Pro, the company rolled out a wide array of new iPhone accessories.
Most years we get a couple case options, and not much else. But this year Apple offered:
And then just last week, Apple also rolled out the iPhone Pocket special-edition accessory.
Clearly, the company is pouring more resources into its iPhone accessory efforts.
But a new leak indicates this is just the start.
Leaker Instant Digital posted over the weekend about Apple’s plans for future accessories. Here’s an English translation of the post:
Apple will invest heavily in official protective cases in the future, transforming them from mere decorative items to “second touch interfaces” for the iPhone, making the iPhone Pro even more “Pro.”
Instant Digital has a reputable track record with Apple leaks. While there’s lots of room for interpretation in his words, they’re intriguing nonetheless.
9to5Mac’s Take
Apple sells a whole lot of iPhones every year. And most of those iPhones end up living in a case.
It makes sense, then, that Apple would want to start taking iPhone cases more seriously.
There’s a ton of accessory revenue currently flowing to third-party companies that Apple could start winning over itself. But there’s also the user experience angle.
If Apple can upgrade cases with features that enhance the iPhone experience, there’s a strong argument to be made for the company exploring that idea.
